Program notes

A magnificent location such as the Esterházy Palace — Haydn's residence and artistic domain for much of his life — calls for an impressive concert repertoire to match its musical legacy. Tonight, Lithuanian conductor Julian Rachlin conducts the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in a perfect program of Classical masterpieces by Mozart and Beethoven! This symphonic double feature begins with Mozart’s joyous “Haffner” Symphony No. 35, commissioned by the noble Haffner family of Salzburg. To finish, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe sets the stage ablaze with Beethoven’s monumental Third Symphony, the “Eroica,” inspired by the legend of Prometheus and the composer’s fascination with Napoleon.
