In 1782, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was just 26 years old, yet he had already established himself on the European stage as a musical genius, and the young composer was highly sought after by the public. It was during this immensely prolific period of his career that he was commissioned by the Haffner family (hence the subtitle of Symphony No. 35, "Haffner"). Sigmund Haffner Jr. initially wrote to him, requesting a serenade for his sister's wedding, now known as Serenade No. 7. Highly satisfied with the young composer, the family approached Mozart again to compose a symphony for a very important occasion: the ennoblement ceremony of the Haffner family house. Overwhelmed with work, Mozart struggled to complete the composition, and the commission unfortunately fell into oblivion, at least until December 1782, when Mozart revisited the unfinished score and finally premiered Symphony No. 35 in D major, "Haffner."

Mozart's Symphony No. 35 in D major, also known as the "Haffner" Symphony, is the final result of a piece commissioned by Sigmund Haffner for his ennoblement ceremony, hence its name. In its definitive version, completed between July and August 1782, the Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385 "Haffner" consists of four movements: 1. Allegro con spirito, 2. Andante, 3. Menuet, 4. Presto, with a duration of approximately 22 minutes. The overall tone of the piece is lively and joyful, which has led some critics to compare it to Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A major, "Italian," although, like the latter, it contains nuances of melancholy. This is evident, for example, in the second theme of the Allegro con spirito, imbued with a subtle and contemplative unease.
