Program notes

At the magnificent Esterházy Palace — where none other than Joseph Haydn worked for most of his life — we are treated to a gold-standard concert by world-renowned conductor and pianist Sir András Schiff and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. This exquisite program balances two contrasting pairs of works by Mozart and Dvořák that offer a sublime blend of Classical poignancy and Romantic lyricism. Two of the Czech composer’s Serenades — his treasured Serenade for Strings in E Major and his Serenade for Winds in D minor — are book-ended by two of Mozart's most beloved piano concertos. The concert opens with the regal elegance and melodic beauty of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 and closes on a more dramatic note as Schiff delves into the emotional complexity of the Piano Concerto No. 20, characterized by its moody and turbulent character, virtuosic piano lines, and extensive independent orchestral passages.
