Program notes

At the sixth edition of the Festival Singer-Polignac, join violist Adrien La Marca, pianist Jérémie Moreau, and the Agate Quartet in dazzling performances of Brahms’s chamber music compositions. First up is his Viola Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, initially written for the clarinet but soon adapted into a staple of the viola repertoire. The dark hues of this sonata complement the deep introspection and melancholic mood of Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B Minor. The work was written for acclaimed clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld — as was the original Sonata in F Minor — and showcases the composer’s mastery in crafting compelling thematic variations.
