О программе

The concert series "Great Concerts of the Orchestre national de Lyon" displays this exceptional concert featuring the French violinist Renaud Capuçon. He performs Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, along with the orchestra conducted by Jun Märkl.

The Symphonie espagnole in D Minor, Op. 21 was composed in 1874 for the violinist Pablo de Sarasate (who wrote the Airs bohémiens and the Carmen-Fantasy, variations on Bizet's themes). It is one of Lalo's most famous works and despite of its name and its five characteristic movements, it is now considered a violin concerto, because of the importance and the virtuoso qualities of the violin solos.

Jun Märkl, who has been the music director of the Orchestre national de Lyon for the past six years also conducts other French masterpieces from the turn of the 19th century: Debussy's Suite bergamasque, with an orchestral arrangement by André Caplet, opens the concert. The rest of the programme is dedicated to Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole and his famous Boléro.
