In August 1888, Mahler completed a symphonic poem called Todtenfeier ("celebration of death"). This work became the first movement of his symphony! The first movement is a funeral, the second movement is an evocation of the happy moments in the life of the deceased, while the third represents a dark vision of life. The fourth movement, on the other hand, explores the theme of faith. As for the fifth and final movement of the symphony, Mahler wanted to involve vocal parts, much like Beethoven did in his Ninth. Thus, the finale concludes with a fervent hope for renewal, sung to the verses of the poet Gottlieb Klopstock: "What is born must perish!/What has perished must rise again!"
