Program notes
On 9 October 1890, the curtain of Madrid's spectacular Teatro Real rose upon the set of Verdi’s penultimate opera, Otello, three years after its Italian premiere. Reluctant to write a new opera after the success of Aida, Verdi eventually composed music for Arrigo Boito’s Italian libretto, based on Shakespeare’s eponymous play. The result was a resounding success and over 130 years later, David Alden’s adaptation of the monumental masterpiece returns to the Teatro Real. Don’t miss the chance to witness a gripping tale of ambition, deceit, and betrayal brought vividly to life by an exceptional cast of soloists — including Brian Jagde in the title role and Asmik Grigorian as Desdemona — as well as the Teatro Real’s superb Youth Choir and Orchestra under the distinguished baton of Nicola Luisotti!
