Program notes
Award-winning stage director Kirill Serebrennikov presents a stunningly inventive production of Mussorgsky’s emblematic opera Boris Godunov, bringing the timeless Russian work into the modern age. Maestro Vasily Petrenko makes his debut with the Dutch National Opera, conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera. Mussorgsky’s libretto, based on Pushkin’s play of the same name and modified by the composer himself, is performed by a stellar cast of vocalists, including leading bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny — known for his ability to “get into the skin of his characters both vocally and in his acting” — who takes on the iconic main role for the first time. Countertenor David van Laar and soprano Inna Demenkova star alongside Konieczny in this highly topical masterwork whose themes of power, persecution, and politics draw striking parallels with today’s world.
