Program notes
In the glitz and glamour of London’s Royal Opera House, celebrate New Year’s Eve 1990 with Strauss’s beloved Die Fledermaus, featuring opera legend Dame Joan Sutherland and the great Luciano Pavarotti! Master of the Viennese waltz, Johann Strauss II brings together festive music, a fantastical plot, and free-flowing champagne in his operatic masterpiece, where disloyalty and infidelity are exposed thanks to clever disguises and unfortunate mistakes…
This historic production was the last-ever performance of the inimitable colatura soprano Joan Sutherland at the iconic London venue, where she enjoyed an illustrious singing career for more than forty years. In the second act, witness her unforgettable voice and impeccable interpretation in various arias by Cilea, Rossini, Saint-Saëns, and Verdi, alongside colleagues and close friends, including mythic tenor Pavarotti and mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne.
