Program notes

Puccini's masterpiece of tragic opera, Tosca, has never sounded better than it does here in the hands of the peerless Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle! The illustrious ensemble provides a note-perfect rendition of the timeless score while a five-star cast dazzles onstage—including Puccini specialist Kristine Opolais in the title role…

Tosca recounts the story of the singer Floria Tosca, whose lover, the painter Cavaradossi (a fabulous Marcelo Álvarez), is secretly hiding a prisoner wanted by the authorities, Cesare Angelotti (Alexander Tsymbalyuk). But Baron Scarpia, the chief of police (Marco Vratogna), plays on Tosca's jealous nature to trick her into leading him to Angelotti… The elegant staging by Philipp Himmelmann accentuates the drama of this complex tragedy, in which the flaws of our nature provide the fertile ground in which political intrigue can flourish.
