Discover the tragic adventures of singer Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, in Puccini’s Tosca! For this opera, the Italian master set Victorien Sardou’s eponymous work to music. While Tosca did not meet with the expected success at its premiere in 1900, it soon became a pillar of the operatic repertoire. Tosca features the indescribably sublime, timeless, and emotional aria Vissi d’arte, performed to perfection by the great Maria Callas (as this superb 1958 archive testifies). Immerse yourself in Puccini's magnificent musical world, which blends the characters’ love affairs with the tumultuous political events of 19th-century Rome!

The greatest artists perform Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca on medici.tv, your #1 classical music streaming channel

In 1889, Puccini attended a performance of La Tosca by French author Victorien Sardou (with the great Sarah Bernhardt in the title role!). The work’s dramatic and implacable nature fascinated the composer, who begged his publisher to obtain the rights to set it to music. After about ten years of negotiations, Puccini’s Tosca finally premiered in Rome! The first performance was not the success the composer had hoped for, but the work quickly won over audiences’ hearts. The most famous names in opera have performed the role of Tosca, but above all stands the performance of the legendary Maria Callas, leaving an unforgettable lasting impression. We have an exceptional archive from 1958, recorded at the Paris Opera, which features the exceptional singer alongside Tito Gobbi! The magnificent score of Puccini’s Tosca, its particularly violent plot, the tragic fate of the protagonists, and the passionate personality of the eponymous heroine collectively create a remarkable work: an immutable pillar in the history of opera.
