Program notes
Yuri Temirkanov and his musicians of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra pay a great tribute to Russia in a program combining Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Mussorgsky’s works.
Each year, Yuri Temirkanov is faithful to the Annecy Classical Music Festival where he meets the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is the emeritus musical director, offering a programme involving Russian emblematic musical works.
The concert will start with a high-octane performance of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations played by the cellist Alexander Kniazev, former student of the Moscow Conservatory and winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition. A performance of the thrilling Polonaise from Tchaikovsky's famous opera Eugene Onegin will follow.
Finally, Mussorgsky's famous piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, a series of ten solo piano pieces orchestrated by Ravel, will end this tailor-made programme for talented musicians.
