Program notes

This all-star lineup from the Verbier Festival's 30th anniversary edition is another prime example of the unique Verbier alchemy that brings together top-name rosters for thrilling collaborations: violinist Janine Jansen, clarinetist Martin Fröst, and violist Amihai Grosz all take the stage with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and maestro Gábor Takács-Nagy

First on the program is Weathered, a clarinet concerto written by Anna Clyne in collaboration with Martin Fröst, who gave an "astonishing" (Bachtrack) UK debut in March 2023. The work touches on our shared global experiences of the pandemic and climate change through five 5-minute movements centered around different weathered elements. Next, violin virtuoso Janine Jansen and Berlin Phil principal violist Amihai Grosz offer a sparkling performance of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola, perhaps Mozart's most iconic masterpiece written in Salzburg, a blend of concerto and symphony that places violin and viola on equal footing. Finally, Takács-Nagy and the VFCO turn to Brahms's Third Symphony, one of the purest distillations of the composer's great talent, whose F-Ab-F motif is thought to represent Brahms's personal motto frei aber froh—free but happy.
