Program notes

With the generous support of Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet

Acclaimed Russian piano virtuoso and 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Denis Matsuev joins his frequent artistic partners, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, for an all-Russian concert program. Matsuev’s dazzling performance of Rodion Shchedrin’s Piano Concerto No. 2—an electrifying dodecaphonic masterpiece premiered with the composer himself at the piano—is framed by the same composer’s Symphonic Diptych (based on his opera The Enchanted Wanderer) and Mussorgsky’s timeless Pictures at an Exhibition. A fascinating concert program honoring the homeland of the brand-new festival under whose auspices it takes place: Moscow’s First Annual Zaryadye International Festival!
