Program notes
The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and a magnificent cast of soloists perform two contrasting, emotionally powerful masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire under the skillful baton of Krzysztof Urbański. The concert begins with Mozart’s iconic Symphony in G Minor, written during a turbulent period of the composer’s life and heavily influenced by the rising Sturm und Drang movement. Completing the program is Górecki’s wrenching Symphony No. 3, known as the "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs," with countertenor Michał Sławecki and sopranos Edyta Krzemień and Anna Federowicz as soloists. The composition centers on motherhood and loss: a fifteenth-century lament of Mary, mother of Jesus; a message on the wall of a Gestapo cell during the Second World War; and a poignant folk song depicting a mother searching for her son killed in the Silesian uprisings.
