Program notes
Spectacular French pianist Hélène Grimaud, Rolex Testimonee since 2009, brings American flair to the banks of Lake Zurich, performing Gershwin's rapturous Piano Concerto in F with the world-renowned Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Paavo Järvi! Famously featured in the Gene Kelly musical An American in Paris, the concerto boasts some of Gershwin's catchiest rhythms and most sublime melodies, and Grimaud is note-perfect in executing all of its "blistering rhythms, fiery octaves and rapid glissandos" (Bachtrack). Maestro Järvi and the orchestra round out the international lineup with the poetic and enigmatic suite from one of the greatest Czech operas, Leoš Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, as well as Finnish legend Jean Sibelius's exquisitely wrought, emotionally expansive Fifth Symphony.
