Program notes

A familiar face at our favorite alpine festival, the great Gábor Takács-Nagy makes a welcome return to lead the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and a lineup of exceptional vocalists—including Peter Mattei, Alexandros Stavrakakis, Magdalena Kožená, and Olga Peretyatko—in a live concert from the Salle des Combins at the 2022 Verbier Festival!

Don Giovanni, a favorite of opera lovers and Romantics alike, and the second grand opus by the Da Ponte-Mozart duo, transcends the conventions of opera buffa and reaches the dramatic heights of great tragedy. Music had never before been so true to life, so realistic, so serious; it had never so strikingly expressed the contrast between the sweetness of love and the horror of death. Perhaps Mozart's most impassioned and most daring masterpiece, the work recounts the story of Don Juan, libertine antihero par excellence, and his descent into hell, poignantly attuned to the foibles of human desire and human nature.
