Program notes
A true icon of the piano, Arthur Rubinstein epitomised excellence and elegance. Both an innate prodigy and relentless worker, he mixed with the greatest composers of the early twentieth century, from Villa-Lobos to Debussy and Stravinsky, and swiftly became a living legend who truly mesmerized his audience. Discover one of his rare recorded recitals in Moscow from 1964. Almost entirely dedicated to Chopin, his favorite composer, it also features works close to his heart, including the whimsical Des Abends from Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op. 12, Debussy's sparkling Ondine and O Polichinello from Villa-Lobos's A prole do bebe, a work that remained with him twelve years later during his final concert in London.
