Program notes
Head to the Tanglewood Festival for the 100th birthday celebration of a true music history legend! An extraordinary cast of conductors Michael Tilson Thomas, Andris Nelsons, and Christoph Eschenbach (to name just a few!) are at the helm of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in this poignant tribute to the great Leonard Bernstein, who studied conducting at the storied festival as a student and went on to teach and perform there for half a century.
The program begins with the Overture from Candide, and also includes the Serenade for Violin, String Orchestra, Harp, and Percussion, as well as excerpts from MASS, the Symphony No. 3, and West Side Story. The evening continues with majestic works by Copland, Mahler, and John Williams, who also takes a turn on the podium. High calibre performances by soloists such as Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Thomas Hampson, Susan Graham, Nadine Sierra, and Kian Soltani gift us with a memorable concert, held in a temple of American music.
