Composed in 1822, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 disappeared off the radar for a while, but reached us against all odds thanks to conductor Johann von Herbeck! If he had not accidentally discovered the autograph of this work, the Symphony would not be widely recognized today. Besides, Symphony No. 8 is a crafted musical enigma: it is also called the Unfinished Symphony (Die Unvollendete), since Schubert never completed  it. Why this title? The reasons for this mystery are yet to be discovered, but they are probably due to the author’s depression, which began during the composition of this work. The obscurity behind the composition of Symphony No. 8, however, is balanced by a crystalline and bright orchestration, and the critic Eduard Hanslick accurately describes this work: “[it] is a sweet stream of melodies, in spite of its vigor and geniality so crystal-clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom. And everywhere the same warmth, the same golden sunshine that makes buds grow!”

The woman of letters Mary Tibaldi Chiesa, upon discussion of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, wrote these vivid lines: « [The Symphony] is like Michelangelo’s Rondanini Pietà, it is a masterpiece precisely because it is unfinished. The Symphony No. 8 is an unmatched jewel, and its beauty is perfect [...] ». In fact, the charm of Symphony No. 8 lies in its openness, since Schubert never finished its third and last movement. And yet, many attempts occurred over time, but they all failed in the end: in 1928, for example, on the occasion of the centenary of Schubert’s death, a competition was organized to complete his Symphony No. 8. Pianist Franck Merrick won first prize, but his work fell by the wayside. More recently, in 2019, thanks to an IA and  the intervention of composer Lucas Cantor, a sequel to the unfinished concerto has been attempted, but the result was not well-received by critics. Not to worry! Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, the “Unfinished,” celebrates the non finito (“not finished”) as an aesthetic of impossibility.
