“To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbarism” stated philosopher, composer, and musicologist Theodor W. Adorno, implying that the atrocities of World War II had made artistic beauty lose its meaning. When listening to Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20, the mind rapidly returns to the film The Pianist: it starts with Polish pianist Władysław Władek Szpilman who, dreamy and diaphanous, performs the composition. Suddenly, a bomb explodes in the recording studio, and from here follows a slow descent into hell. His story echoes that of concertist Natalia Kark who, having been captured and taken to a concentration camp, interpreted Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20 and thus moved her captors. This is how she saved her and her sister’s lives. The subtitle of “Reminiscence” to Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20, then, takes on a new significance, as it holds the memory of their innocent lives.
