О программе

Considered by many to be Austria’s unofficial national anthem, On the Beautiful Blue Danube is known the world over for its beguilling simplicity and elegance. Nicknamed the “Waltz King”, its composer Johann Strauss Jr. presided over a musical dynasty that dominated Viennese popular music for decades, and to learn about him and his family is to understand that there is much more to the Viennese waltz tradition than meets the ear…

The waltz itself began life as a sensual musical novelty, whose choreography gave men and women of the upper classes the unprecedented right to touch each other in public. Although Johann Strauss Jr. was one of the first to compose waltzes for polite society, he was almost as well-known for his erotomania as for his music. And while the "Waltz King" may have been the most famous member of the family, his younger brothers were equally if not (in the case of the middle brother Josef) even more talented than Johann!

With the help of noted Viennese musicians, musicologists, and members of the Strauss family, Eric Schulz’s documentary explores this complicated history, interweaving historical film footage with selected performances of the Strauss family’s music by the Viennese Johann Strauss Orchestra under conductor Johannes Wildner.
