Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1888, nearly eleven years after the premiere of his fourth symphony. It consists of four movements (1. Andante, 2. Andante cantabile, 3. Valse, 4. Finale) and is built upon a recurring motif, a "fixed idea" in the composer's words—a technique previously used by Beethoven in his fifth symphony and by Brahms in his third symphony. The underlying theme of Symphony No. 5 is the idea of fate; as written in the composer's sketchbook: "Introduction: Total submission to Fate or, what amounts to the same thing, to the inescapable predestination of Providence. Allegro: I. Murmurs, doubts, complaints, reproaches to... II. Is it not better to throw oneself headlong into faith? The program is excellent, provided that I can realize it."
