Il Trovatore premiered in 1853 at the Apollo Theater in Rome, and its success was immediate. As musicologist Julian Budden wrote: “With no other work, not even Nabucco, has Verdi touched the heart of his public to the same extent.” In fact, alongside Rigoletto and La Traviata (which compose his “popular trilogy”), Il Trovatore is a composition placed in the pantheon of Giuseppe Verdi’s Golden Age. And yet, during the writing of his masterpieces, problems were still arising, starting with the death of his librettist Salvadore Cammarano in 1852, who was later replaced by Leone Emanuele Bardare. Inspired by the drama by Antonio García Gutiérrez El Trovador, the complex plot of Verdi’s Il Trovatore takes place in the 15th century in a fairytale-like version of the Spanish provinces of Biscay and Aragon, where witches, troubadours, gypsies, and princesses give life to one of the most popular operas ever written.
