Composed in 1883 following a trip to Spain, España is Emmanuel Chabrier’s most famous orchestral rhapsody. Inspired by the dances and landscapes that greatly influenced the composer during his stay, this one-movement work features lively rhythms, vibrant orchestral colors, and infectious energy. In particular, Chabrier incorporates elements of the traditional dances, jota and malagueña, without seeking to faithfully reproduce Spanish folklore. Instead, he conveys the impressions and emotions of his journey. Premiered in Paris in 1883 under the baton of Charles Lamoureux, España was an immediate and resounding success, contributing significantly to the composer’s fame.

España is an orchestral rhapsody by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, composed between January and August 1883. The work was originally titled Jota, before the composer renamed it España in the fall of the same year. Chabrier initially composed the work for piano four hands, before deciding to expand it into a large-scale orchestral piece, which he dedicated to conductor Charles Lamoureux. España premiered on November 4, 1883, conducted by Lamoureux himself. Conceived as a single-movement rhapsody, marked Allegro con fuoco, the work opens with string pizzicatos that evoke the plucking of guitar strings. Its syncopated rhythm immediately gives it a decidedly dance-like character. España is built around two main themes drawn from traditional Spanish dances: the brilliant and playful first theme embodies the Aragonese jota; the second, more sensual theme draws on the malagueña from the south of the peninsula. The piece concludes with a final reprise of the first theme, carried by dazzling trombone fanfares with flamenco-inspired accents. From the day of its premiere, España was a triumph and brought Chabrier immediate international fame.

Chabrier and Spain: A Revelation

In 1880, Emmanuel Chabrier left the Interior Ministry, where he had worked for 20 years, to devote himself entirely to music. From July to December 1882, he traveled through Spain with his wife, visiting San Sebastián, Seville, Granada, Córdoba, and Barcelona, among other places. Fascinated by the traditional music and dances he discovered there, he enthusiastically noted a multitude of themes, rhythms, and impressions, as evidenced by his travel letters. Upon his return to Paris, he promised Lamoureux that he would compose a piece with Spanish influences that would enchant the audience. Chabrier did not aim to faithfully transcribe Spanish folklore as an ethnomusicologist. Above all, he wished to convey the experience of his journey through lively and richly colored music. España remains Chabrier’s most famous work to this day, and one of the most iconic pieces of French musical Hispanicisim, alongside works like Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole.
