TIPPET RISE ART CENTER

Tippet Rise Art Center is located in Fishtail, Montana against the backdrop of the Beartooth Mountains, roughly midway between Billings and Bozeman and north of Yellowstone National Park. Set on a 10,260 acre working sheep and cattle ranch, Tippet Rise hosts classical music performances and exhibits large-scale outdoor sculptures. Tippet Rise believes that art, music, architecture, and nature rise to a new level when they collaborate.

As an institution founded to serve its neighbors in Montana as much as visiting musicians, artists, and audiences, Tippet Rise develops and supports year-round education programs in schools at the K-12 level, in local colleges and universities, and other organizations.

The 2018 season at Tippet Rise Art Center features eight weeks of music including programs focusing on masterworks by J.S. Bach and great modern and contemporary repertoire. The season also includes the world premiere of composer Aaron Jay Kernis’ work for string quartet and two dozen programs performed by internationally celebrated musicians and outstanding emerging artists.

Performers in 2018 include: Pianists Timo Andres, Julien Brocal, Jenny Chen, Ingrid Fliter, Wu Han, Jeffrey Kahane, Anne-Marie McDermott, Pedja Muzijevic, Yevgeny Sudbin and Orion Weiss; Violinists Aaron Boyd, Krista Bennion Feeney, Vadim Gluzman, Caroline Goulding and Daniel Phillips; Cellists David Finckel, Myron Lutzke and Johannes Moser; Flutist Tara Helen O’Connor; Clarinetist Anton Dressler; Bassist Xavier Foley; Horn player Stewart Rose; Vocalist and Pianist Gabriel Kahane; and The Borromeo, Calidore, Dover and Escher string quartets.

The majority of concerts at Tippet Rise are performed in the 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, with select daytime concerts taking place at the open-air Domo, a 98-foot-long, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio.

In addition to its music program, Tippet Rise Art Center presents large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Many are site-specific commissions that aim to weave together the boundaries of art, nature, and architecture. Artworks set within the landscape include several sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio; two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor Mark di Suvero; two site-specific works by Stephen Talasnik and Patrick Dougherty; and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
