Program notes

Composed by Mozart at the age of fourteen during his trip to Italy, Mithridates, King of Pontus is an opera seria that explores the themes of power, loyalty, and betrayed love. At war with Rome, King Mithridates suspects his two sons, Pharnaces and Xipharès, as well as his fiancée Aspasia, of plotting against him. To test their loyalty, he spreads a rumor of his own death, triggering a series of conflicts in which political ambitions and romantic passions intertwine, ultimately revealing each character’s true nature.

Presented at the Salzbury Festival 2006 as part of the Mozart 22 project, this acclaimed production brings together some of the greatest performers of the Mozart repertoire. Günter Krämer’s staging, brought to life by Marc Minkowski’s musical direction, powerfully highlights the dramatic richness and striking maturity of this early work…
