Nathalie Stutzmann — Conductor

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Program notes

For many years, conductor Nathalie Stutzmann stayed away from Ravel's famed Boléro, one of the best known works ever composed. "Something was missing for me in my understanding of the piece," said Stutzmann. "I heard versions that were very colorful, and sometimes very beautiful, but I didn’t really feel the darker side of it, the drama behind it." That was before a musicologist friend introduced her to the original score, a ballet with a different orchestration from the one she was used to. Intrigued, she researched the work intensely until it clicked: it was time to conduct the Boléro. This documentary by Hilan Warshaw follows Maestra Stutzmann in this exciting adventure, alongside the excellent Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
