Program notes

Global violin star Joshua Bell joins maestro Daniel Harding at the 2026 Verbier Festival for a rich program of evocative 20th century music! The virtuoso takes on the heart-rending Violin Concerto by Ukrainian composer Thomas de Hartmann. Written in 1943 in response to the devastating destruction of the composer’s country during the Second World War, the concerto’s mournful, folkloric themes evoke a tragic sense of loss that still resonates today. Harding then leads the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Rachmaninov’s sweeping Symphony No. 2. Written 10 years after the infamous failure of his First Symphony, the Second’s flamboyant orchestral colors and abundant lyricism restored Rachmaninov’s reputation as a symphonist and make this one of the composer’s most enduringly popular works.
