Program notes

Don’t miss one of the highlights of the 2026 Verbier Festival: a stellar cast of singers in Mozart’s playful opera, Così fan tutte, with maestro Gábor Takács-Nagy! The beloved masterwork marks the end of Mozart’s legendary collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, with whom he worked on The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Their final work together, Così fan tutte (usually translated as “All women are like that”) combines Mozart’s masterful orchestration with da Ponte’s keen sense of theatrics to create a light-hearted opera buffa.

Are all women unfaithful? For Don Alfonso (the esteemed Luca Pisaroni), there is no doubt about it. In a wager with his friends Ferrando (Giovanni Sala) et Guglielmo (Konstantin Krimmel) based on the fickle loyalty of their respective wives, Don Alfonso convinces them to pretend to leave for war and return disguised as foreign soldiers in order to seduce each others’ fiancées, sisters Fiordiligi et Dorabella (Johanna and Rebecka Wallroth). Mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and mix-ups: a recipe for a timeless, charming operatic farce.
