Program notes

At the 30th anniversary edition of the Verbier Festival, Danish powerhouse Bo Skovhus leads an all-star production of Berg's modern masterpiece Wozzeck, conducted by Lahav Shani. Alongside the likes of Camilla Nylund (as Wozzeck's companion Marie), Gerhard Siegel (the Captain), and Adèle Charvet (Marie's friend Margret), Skovhus fully inhabits the role of the tormented soldier whose possessive nature leads to one of opera's most indelibly tragic ends.

The most famous early example of atonality in opera, Wozzeck fascinates as much today as it did a century ago for the quality of Berg's orchestral writing and his ingenious musical architecture: each scene represents a different form, from suite and rhapsody to fantasia and fugue, passacaglia and scherzo, and a final act composed of inventions centered around different tonal, modal, thematic, and rhythmic bases.
