Program notes

At Carnegie Hall, Denis Matsuev performs with one of the most prestigious Russian orchestras: the Mariinsky Orchestra, led by its eminent musical director, Valery Gergiev.

medici.tv and Carnegie Hall have furthered their partnership, which had been established at the end of last year: On 28 January 2015, for the first time ever, medici.tv broadcasts a symphonic concert that is recorded live from Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage! This concert highlights the legendary orchestra of St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre. Under the leadership of Valery Gergiev (general and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre), the orchestra performs an all-Russian program of works composed between the end of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century.

The concert starts with a version of "Naughty Limericks," which is indisputably the most famous of the five concertos for orchestra composed by Shchedrin. It was created under the aegis of Gennadi Rozhdestvensky in Warsaw in 1963 and elicited significant recognition of Shchedrin's talent. Then, Denis Matsuev joins the orchestra to play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2, a work comparable with the composer's most renowned creations, but unfortunately too seldom heard in concert. Then, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 provides the plat de résistance. This vast symphony is, if not the most famous, one of its composer's best works, according to Prokofiev himself. "It is the climax of an entire era in my work."
