Program notes
Don’t miss the Tsinandali Festival 2023! Every year since 2019, the greatest performers, conductors, composers, and artists from all over the world have joined forces for 10 days in the magnificent village of Tsinandali, in eastern Georgia, to promote music in this region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The 2023 edition features a special celebration of the great Sergei Rachmaninov, marking 150 years since the legendary Romantic composer's birth.
This concert in two parts—part of the festival's Rachmaninov Anniversary Marathon, a tribute to the great Georgian-born pianist Alexander "Lexo" Toradze, who passed away in 2022—begins with a gorgeous selection of Rachmaninov's songs, interpreted by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Irina Sherazadishvili with Nino Jvania at the piano. Next up, international prize-winning pianists Alexander Malofeev and Boris Giltburg take the stage to perform the Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos in G Minor. Dedicated to Tchaikovsky, who died just weeks before its premiere, the suite consists of four deeply emotive movements inspired by poems, including Lord Byron's Parisina: "It is the hour when lovers’ vows / Seem sweet in every whisper’d word; / And gentle winds, and waters near, / Make music to the lonely ear…"
