Program notes

Join Petr Popelka and the Wiener Symphoniker for the 2023 edition of their annual Springtime in Vienna concert! This year, the orchestra is joined by one of the leading voices of the operatic stage, Swiss soprano Regula Mühlemann, for an uplifting program honoring some of the greatest Czech, Austrian, Hungarian, and German composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.

At the prestigious Wiener Konzerthaus, the concert opens with four orchestral passages from The Bartered Bride, one of Bedřich Smetana’s most famous and nationally symbolic operas, based on a libretto by Karel Sabina and inspired by the folklore and rural life of his native Czechia. The radiant Regula Mühlemann then takes center stage for Dvořák’s heart-rending “Song to the Moon,” followed by three beautiful Lieder, “Lilie,” “Sonnenblume,” and “Rote Rose,” from the floral Blumenlieder collection by Robert Stolz, an emblematic figure of the Viennese musical tradition. This enchanting spring program blossoms into its full musical splendor with orchestral pieces from Zoltán Kodály, Richard Strauss, and Johann Strauss II.
