Sir Antonio Pappano — Conductor
Program notes
Continuing its Spanish-themed tour with distinguished conductor and regular collaborator Sir Antonio Pappano, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe writes another chapter in its historic residence at Esterházy Palace with an exciting program featuring Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances! Now well-established in the COE’s repertoire — they received great acclaim for their live recording of the whole set of dances with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in 2002 — the Slavonic Dances are one of the Czech composer’s most popular works. After hearing Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, Dvořák set out to evoke the spirit of Bohemian folk music styles when he wrote the two sets of dances in 1878 (Op. 46, the set heard tonight) and 1886 (Op. 72).
