Program notes

The MISA (Music In The Summer Air) Festival's tradition continues in Shanghai with a quaint but nonetheless modern program executed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra! Watch this surprising performance which includes a Ping Pong Concerto... How intriguing!

The oldest orchestra in Asia, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, has managed to attract internationally renowned artists while retaining its Chinese essence, as demonstrated during this peculiar evening.

The rhythm of sport and music are combined during the 2015 MISA Festival thanks to an amazing Ping Pong Concerto! During the performance, violins and percussions join the sound of bouncing balls, as two professional ping pong players, the top American athletes Michael Landers and Ariel Hsing, share the spotlight with the musicians. Elizabeth Zeltser and the percussionist David Cossin, who plays very unusual instruments... join them. The conductor Huang Yi conducts this piece composed by Andy Akiho. This unique composition is fresh and new. The New York Times called Akiho’s music "mould-breaking" and "vital."

Zhang Jiemin takes over to conduct the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, followed by the famous conductor Long Yu. The latter is the chief conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Hong Kong Orchestra.

iSING! delivers a strong performance during this exciting evening and performs a medley of their most loved Chinese and foreign songs. iSING! is a unique first-of-its-kind exchange program which brings together the finest singers from around the world – including twenty international artists from the United States of America and China.
