Program notes
Distinguished conductor Nathalie Stutzmann and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra complete their year-long cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies with the spectacular “Choral” Symphony No. 9! Watch as the Atlanta Symphony Hall resonates with one of the greatest masterpieces of Western classical music. Not only renowned for its iconic “Ode to Joy” fourth movement, the symphony was also one of the first symphonies by a major composer to incorporate voice parts, interpreted here with exquisite artistry by soprano Christina Nilsson, mezzo-soprano Rhianna Cockrell, tenor Siyabonga Maqungo, and baritone Leon Košavić. The program opens with Bach’s sparkling Double Violin Concerto BWV 1043, with Concertmaster David Coucheron and Associate Concertmaster Lauren Roth showcasing their impeccable synchronicity and technical mastery. We are also treated to Bach's sublime Cantata No. 56, Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen (“I will gladly carry the cross-staff”), performed by the world-renowned Atlanta Symphony Chorus.
