Program notes
Join in the birthday celebrations for one of the most beloved cellists of our time: the great Mischa Maisky. To mark his 75th birthday, the virtuoso is joined by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie under the baton of Paavo Järvi. Together, the maestro, orchestra, and soloist revisit the masterpieces that have marked the latter's illustrious career, beginning with Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. The romantic expressiveness of this large-scale piece is complemented by the composer's Nocturne Op. 19 No. 4 and Max Bruch's poignant Kol Nidrei. Symphonies Nos. 93 and 104, known as the “London” symphonies, by Joseph Haydn, a specialist in this instrumental genre, open and close this gala concert!
