In a rare event one summer evening in 2008, ever-astonishing Martha Argerich went alone onto the Verbier Festival stage to play Bach’s Second Partita.
To see Martha Argerich perform is an unparalleled experience. The so-called Lionness of the piano is known for her audacity, enthusiasm, and her fiery temperament, both on and off the concert stage, and these qualities made Bach’s Partita crackle with caprice and poetry, with Argerich once more asserts herself as queen of her instrument.
With four hands, Kovacevich and Argerich performed a Mozart piano duo, passing joking and complicit looks between them as they interpreted Mozart’s score with childlike joy. Then came Mischa Maisky and his lyric and passionate playing, uniting with Argerich to bring the concert to new heights of tempestuousness and inventiveness.
