Program notes

A few months after celebrating her 84th birthday, Martha Argerich proves once again that some rare gifts are immune to the passage of time. Alongside the Vienna Philharmonic and Tugan Sokhiev, the grande dame of the piano returns to Prokofiev's electrifying Piano Concerto No. 3, a piece whose lightning-quick runs, propulsive attacks, and precise finger work have stymied many a pianist of every age but which Argerich knows like a trusted friend. With the program's second half given over to Stravinsky's brilliantly theatrical Petrushka, this evening at the Vienna Musikverein is a relentless thrill ride through 20th-century Russian masterpieces, guided by one of the best soloist-conductor-orchestra teams assembled on any of the world's prestigious stages in 2025.
