Program notes

The mega-talented Mao Fujita, Verbier Festival Academy alumnus and winner of many prestigious accolades—including a widely lauded run to the Silver Medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition—makes his solo debut on the stage of the Verbier Festival! Over the course of five exceptional concerts, the young pianist tackles a formidable challenge: the complete Mozart Piano Sonatas.

This first round opens with Sonatas No. 3, 4, and 5, all composed in 1774 during a trip to Munich for the production of his opera La finta giardiniera. The virtuosic Sonata No. 3 sets the tone for the evening, with a superb concluding Rondo guaranteed to delight—followed by the charming Sonata No. 4 (the only one with an introductory slow movement), and the jubilant Sonata No. 5! The prodigy then leaps forward in time to 1784 with the Sonata No. 14, one of only two among the 18 sonatas written in a minor key. Fujita concludes this impeccable first recital with the irresistably charming Sonata No. 10, one of Mozart's most popular piano works.
