Program notes

John Wilson and his orchestra combine “swing authenticity with the poise of a deluxe concert Orchestra” (The Times) in a stunning performance at the 2016 BBC Proms. The stage of the Royal Albert Hall shines with "three of the greatest West End musical theatre stars”—Louise Dearman, Matthew Ford, and Julian Ovenden—paying tribute to George and Ira Gershwin, one of America’s most celebrated songwriting duos. Having spent two decades reviving music from Hollywood’s Golden age, John Wilson found six original scores and transcribed the remaining twelve pieces one note at a time. The result does not disappoint. Hailed a “top-class tribute to the Gershwins” by the Radio Times, this concert takes you on a journey through theme tunes, dance numbers, musical songs, and even ballet music: don’t miss a beat!
