Program notes

Immerse yourself in an exhilarating, whirlwind program of American-themed music with world-renowned conductor Fabio Luisi and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra! Inon Barnatan, “one of the most admired pianists of his generation” (New York Times), joins the orchestra for Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, filling Dallas’s Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center with all of the exuberance and jazz-inspired colors of what the composer called a “musical kaleidoscope of America.” Its buoyant energy continues into Morton Gould’s Latin-American Symphonette, an electrifying ode to the fun and frenzy of Latin-American music styles, each of the four movements inspired by the Rhumba, Tango, Guaracha, and Conga respectively. The concert opener is the world premiere of For everything you keep losing, an original and thought-provoking work by Puerto Rican-born composer Angélica Negrón. The requiem-style piece for orchestra, SATB chorus, and four soloists (Lauren Snouffer, Kimberly James, Key’mon Murrah, and Paul Appleby) explores the loss of sonic diversity in the natural world and incorporates birdsong, whale calls, and the sounds of forests and oceans.
