Program notes
Amid the glittering lights of the Parisian night, David Bismuth's nimble fingers and the Goldberg Trio's graceful bows weave a complex and mesmerizing tapestry of sound. In the heart of the majestic Eiffel Tower, the "Iron Lady" of Paris, resound the clear timbres of some of the most beautiful Classical and Baroque melodies: Mozart's melancholy Fantasies Nos. 3 and 4, Handel's somber Minuet in G minor, and Haydn's light-hearted and optimistic String Trio in G minor as well as his expressive Sonata in E minor. Most of all, it is Mozart's sublime Piano Quartet in G minor that guides this program, whose virtuosity is matched only by its transcendent poetry. In the image of Mozart's famous "academies," where he would intersperse entire pieces between progressing movements of a work, it is this principle of "freedom of form rarely afforded to us today" that David Bismuth and the three musicians of the Goldberg Trio celebrate in their album Mozart Akademie.
