Program notes
In this thrilling concert conducted by maestro Semyon Bychkov, the Czech Philharmonic invites the extraordinary Yuja Wang to take on one of the crown jewels of Russian Romantic piano in true Yuja style. The rare classical artist to achieve superstar status in the 21st century, Yuja performs with "a combination of blazing technique and a rare instinct for poetry," according to Gramophone — which also bestowed the Czech Philharmonic their prestigious Orchestra of the Year award in 2024.
At home in Prague's Dvořák Hall, the award-winning orchestra highlights a few of the most striking contributions of their countrymen, including the monumental Glagolitic Mass, composed by Leoš Janáček at the end of his life, as well as an a cappella interpretation of Martin Smolak's Agnus Dei. At the heart of the program is Yuja's electrifying rendition of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, a piece suffused with the combination of virtuoso technique and melodic beauty that make the composer's work so beloved — and a perfect showcase for a world-class pianist at the height of her powers.
