Program notes

To young pianists seeking to make a name for themselves, there may be no prize more coveted than a medal at the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw — a contest that has helped launch the international careers of huge names like Martha Argerich, Maurizio Pollini, Garrick Ohlsson (the chair of this year's jury), Krystian Zimerman, Gabriela Montero, Yundi Li, Daniil Trifonov, Seong-Jin Cho, and more. Held every five years, this unique competition focuses on a single composer whose piano-centric oeuvre redefined the possibilities of the instrument and continues to represent one of the uncontested pinnacles of piano writing. Watch the winners of the 2025 edition — Eric Lu (Gold), Kevin Chen (Silver), Zitong Wang (Bronze), Tianyao Lyu and Shiori Kuwahara (4th prize ex aequo), Piotr Alexewicz and Vincent Ong (5th prize ex aequo), and William Yang (6th prize) — preceded by two winners of special prizes who did not make it to the final stage, Adam Kałduński and Yehuda Prokopowicz, in performances of some of Chopin's most memorable works in their victory lap at the Prizewinners' concert!
