Every year on May 1, the Berliner Philharmoniker commemorates the anniversary of its founding with the beloved Europakonzert, which brings the world-renowned orchestra to a different European city each year. The 2026 edition finds them at the exquisite Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria, alongside their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and cello star Gautier Capuçon! Their program opens with the charming Overture in D major by Haydn, the composer who spent four decades working for the Esterházy family and whose name now adorns the palace's stunning concert hall. After the spirited Pulcinella Suite by Stravinsky, music composed to accompany the 1920 commedia dell'arte-inspired ballet, Capuçon takes the stage to perform Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, a stylistic homage to Mozart that ranks among the most beloved concertante works in the cello repertoire. The 2026 Europakonzert closes with Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D, an early work already filled with the kinds of unconventional choices and flashes of wit that would come to characterize the greatest works of the greatest symphonist.
