Program notes

Just a few weeks after her celebrated Verbier Festival debut, fabulously talented pianist Alexandra Dovgan (b. 2007) returns to another anticipated Alpine event: the Gstaad Menuhin Festival! From the historic Church of Rougemont, Dovgan—a protégée of the great Grigory Sokolov, who noticed her considerable promise early—regales us lucky viewers with a solo recital of both style and substance, beginning with Mozart—the bewitching Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, one of only two out of 18 written in a minor key—and continuing with works by Brahms: the virtuosic and ingenious Handel Variations, followed by three of his richly melodic Intermezzi.
