Program notes

One of the most anticipated events of the classical calendar, the Vienna Philharmonic’s exquisite New Year’s Concert brings the musicians of the prestigious orchestra together under the baton of a different influential conductor each year. Centered around a wide variety of dances in the Viennese style—especially the world-famous waltzes of the Strauss family—every edition brims with stately serenity and a hint of mischief, the perfect way to begin your New Year in music.

The orchestra joins forces with Andris Nelsons in this sparkling 2020 edition, which begins with the triumphant Overture from Ziehrer's operetta The Vagabonds. Next up are dances by Josef, Eduard, and Johann Strauss, Jr., broken up by another famed Overture from von Suppé's Light Cavalry. The dances continue apace, and the concert comes to a close with the two traditional, ever-ebullient encores of the event: Johann Strauss, Jr.'s Blue Danube Waltz and his father, Johann Sr.'s, Radetzky March!
