Program notes
Staged by Italian choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti and set to stunning music by Monteverdi and Mussorgsky, this masterful adaptation of Franz Kafka’s novel The Trial will plunge you into the depths of the human psyche and leave you metamorphosed!
Performed by the Czech National Ballet, this striking contemporary production recounts the story of Josef K., an ordinary man inexplicably arrested on his thirtieth birthday and subjected to an arbitrary and absurd legal trial. Powerless and alienated by the new world around him, Josef K. (Ondřej Vinklát) struggles to be understood, especially when faced with the press and their distressing newspaper headlines (portrayed in human form by Kristýna Němečková). The dancers’ angular and contorted movements, as well as Carlo Cerri’s minimalist sets and harsh lighting, intensify the oppressive and surrealist atmosphere of this existentialist ballet.
